Garden Update #4 – Wordless Wednesday

August 4, 2010 By Emily McClements
Thank you for supporting this site with purchases made through links in this post.

Ready to remove toxic cleaners from your home? Find out how!

I’m going to let my pictures do the updating on my garden today, with just a few quick explanations. My zucchini plants died! They were too heavy and too close to the edge of the box so the stems broke off and they’re gone. πŸ™
One lonely little pepper

The weeds are taking over outside of this box! At least they’re not inside!

Random – is this a stalk of corn growing in my flower bed?
And a question for all you experienced gardeners out there (are you out there?) why are my tomatoes doing this? Do they need more water? I have not been great about watering them regularly, but it seems like we’ve been getting enough rain, but I wonder if they’re still not getting enough? Or is it some kind of disease?

The tomatoes are most likely splitting because of the rain you have been getting or if you are watering them from the top rather than at the base. When tomatoes get wet and then get hit with sun again, they will split.

I was going to say the same thing as Christine. They are still good, though. Isn’t is so rewarding to grow some of your own food and learn all about it as you go!?!?

Good question on the tomatoes. Mine have been splitting too–though mostly when they are close to being ripe. I try to water at the bast of the plants. Maybe I should go out and towel them off after a good rain storm. he he. πŸ™‚

Actually, Christine is right! I got the same problem with my tomatoes. It is really because of the rain. It is like the rain is causing the tomatoes to split. That is why I made a cover for my tomatoes. A wide screen roof just for my tomatoes to break all the heavy rain drops from hitting my tomatoes.

You should water the tomatoes regularly. You should not give the responsibility on the rain because for all I know rain is acid that’s why it causes your tomatoes to split. Fresh water will be great from controlling the effect of the acid rain.

The reason for the splitting is actually inconsistent watering. Tomatoes would prefer a slower dose of water all the time versus a heavy rain, then maybe you don’t water for a few days, then a heavy go with the hose. The best way to water tomatoes is by using a soaker hose laid down in the bed. Also, if you are watering with a conventional sprinkler or by hand with a wand, you are watering the leaves instead of where the plants need it in the root zone. Up to 75% of the water can evaporate off the leaves, because plants cannot take in water that way.

Soaker hoses are a good idea for most vegetables as it gives you the most control, with the least waste!

Bell peppers and tomatoes! I can sense salsa around here! LOL. My favorite! LOL. But seems like the tomatoes are having a little problem. But my tomatoes are also having a different complication. My tomatoes go red with a size like marbles. LOL. But it is back normal already. I just hope it goes on through the rest of the year.
