It’s been a really long time since I last posted before and after pictures of our house. But, the other day I was picking up in our bedroom and thought it would be a great time to take pics of the room to share with you.
Our master bedroom is just one of the two bedrooms on our main floor. Our upstairs is a converted attic that is set up as a master suite with a large room, really big closet and attached large bathroom with double sinks. But, when we decided to buy this house we didn’t feel comfortable putting our kids on the main floor while we slept upstairs. It just made me nervous, and Kaelyn’s room had been upstairs at our old house, so we were used to being on the main floor while our kids were upstairs.
When we decided that we would put our kids up in the master bedroom it meant that we would be giving up the luxuries of a closet large enough for both our clothes (and then some), and an attached bathroom with two sinks. But, it really hasn’t been that big of a sacrifice. We use the closet in the other bedroom for Jer’s work clothes, we store our off season clothing in the basement, and we have simplified our clothing to only clothes that we actually use and wear.
We really like our room, it feels relaxing and cozy and we actually fit all of the furniture that we had in our bedroom at our old house.
Before: (sorry for the quality of these pics, Jer took them while the inspection was being done on the house)
We painted and changed the light fixture, but the blinds are the same mini-blinds that came with the house. I would love to do some kind of window treatment, but don’t really know what to do. I think curtains would add softness and a little romance to the room, but I really am so bad at picking out curtains! There is only window in our house that has curtains on it, and that’s because they came with the house when we bought it!
I would also love to find or make a pillow for our bench so that it would be kind of like a window seat. Not that we would ever really use it for that, but again, I think it would add some softness to the room. I also want to get some live houseplants for their air purifying benefits, and because I love the freshness that they bring to a room.
The picture above the bed is from Ikea and we love the way it looks in the room. I wouldn’t mind having some different lamps for our nightstands, but it’s definitely not a necessity, maybe if I found some good ones on craigslist or something. I’m definitely no interior designer or even have a knack for that kind of thing like some people do, Jer is actually better at it than I am. 🙂 But, we try to keep things simple and uncluttered, with not too much going on.
Any ideas for me for curtains in our Master Bedroom? I would love links to pictures for inspiration!

Awesome link! Thanks Em! I knew you’d have an idea for me! 😉 I love the look of those white curtains – and so affordable too! Those would totally add the softness and romance I’m looking for!
p.s. looks great, Em. I LOVE that picture above your bed.
That is a beautiful, relaxing room! The one thing I would change is to line up the furniture with the windows if at all possible, so that the headboard isn’t blocking part of the window and the bench is centered under the window or has one end lined up with one side of the window frame. That kind of alignment helps to make things feel more serene.
For curtains, I would find lightweight woven fabric in a pattern that complements the room (something similar to that picture above the bed would be great) and make simple hemmed rectangles with a casing across the top and put them on lightweight rods attached to the window frames. (Mounting them on wood is much easier to get right than mounting them on a plaster or wallboard wall.) You can open them by scrunching along the rod if you can reach it, or make tiebacks. An easy way to do tiebacks is to sew plastic or metal rings (from fabric store) to both ends of a strip of fabric or a coordinating ribbon, and screw a cup hook into the window frame at the height you like; hang one ring on the hook, and when you want to tie back the curtain, loop the tieback around it and put the other ring over the hook.
Thanks ‘Becca! I agree that it would be nice to not have the bed covering up part of the window, but the bed frame is alittle big for the space and that’s just the best way for us to fit all of our furniture. I think the bench is usually centered under the window, I noticed that in the pictures too, I guess it somehow got pushed over a little.
Thanks for the idea about the curtains too. I really like your idea for making tiebacks. I’ll have to keep my eye open for fabric ideas. The problem is, I’m pretty bad at picking out fabric too! 🙂
Hi Emily, do you mind me asking what color you pained your master bedroom? It’s such a soothing color. Thanks so much!!! Michelle
Thanks Michelle! I don’t know off the top of my head, but I could probably find out if I do some digging in my basement. I’ll have to get back to you on this one!
Sarah Richardson——– I am desperate to find the material that you used to make the headboard and the dust ruffle in season 1. I think it was season 1. I have the bedspread and pillow shams that I ordered from JC Penneys, but due to our dogs, they are in really bad shape. I love this fabric and would like to make a new spread and pillow shams. PLEASE help me. I am redecorating a house that we inherited from my in-laws and I want to make it completely mine, with only my touches. Thank you for all your input. [email protected] PS- The fabric is a white background with brown stalks and blue flowers of leaves, if that helps any
