Simple Steps – A Month to Review

February 7, 2011 By Emily McClements
Thank you for supporting this site with purchases made through links in this post.

Ready to remove toxic cleaners from your home? Find out how!

So we’ve been doing the Simple Steps series for 6 months now and I thought this would be a great time to take a break and review our previous Simple Steps (that and the Super Bowl, and still fighting a cold, means I didn’t have a post ready for this morning), to see the changes we’ve made along the way and remind ourselves to keep taking these Simple Steps – in case we, ahem, I might be getting a little lazy on some of them. (P.S. Do you like my new button?  I did it myself!)

Simple Step #1 – Conserve Water

Are you still following the “If it’s yellow, let it mellow” rule in your house?  What other ways have you found to conserve water?

Simple Step #2 – Change Your Handsoap

Have you ditched the anti-bacterial soap yet?  If not, please, please do this one soon!

Simple Step #3 – Turn off Your Lights

This is one I’ve gotten lax about lately – I need to make sure to double check rooms when I leave, or just glance around the house every so often, to make sure I’ve turned off all the lights in rooms we’re not using!

Simple Step #4 – Turn Down Your Thermostat

Another great keep warm tip if you are keeping your thermostat low – wash dishes.  Again, I didn’t think of this one when I was writing the post because I hate doing dishes and avoid it as much as possible, but one day I had to give in to the mountain of dishes and keeping my hands in the warm dish water actually helped warm me up!  I guess I should wash dishes more often. Hmph.

Simple Step #5 – Move Your Paper Towels

How are you doing with using fewer paper towels and keeping your cloths more accessible?  Have you decreased your disposables in other ways around your home?  (Oh, and that reminds me I STILL have to do our garbage inventory – okay, I will get to it, I promise! I know you all are just waiting on the edge of your seat to see what our family is throwing away!)

Next month we’ll jump back in with another Simple Step, but for now be proud of the simple and easy changes you’ve made over the past few months that are helping to save you money and save the planet!

Have you taken any other simple steps these past few months that you like to share?  I love to get inspiration from changes that others are making!

I’d love to see more of you! Please consider subscribing to e-mail updates, or in a reader, to be sure you don’t miss a single post.  You can also connect with me on Twitter and Facebook!

We got a water-efficient toilet when we renovated our bathroom, and we’ve found that letting it mellow causes it to stain and smell because there just isn’t as much water to dilute it! So we flush every time. But we are making a point of using that toilet upstairs in preference to the one downstairs, which uses FOUR times as much water per flush!

I made a new year’s resolution to be ready for church on time so we won’t have to drive–it’s less than one mile away. We’ve kept it so far, even last Sunday when it was about 12 degrees out and I had to carry about 12 pounds of food because we were serving the coffee hour.
