Green in 365 series

This is Day 80 of the Green in 365 series!

We’ve talked a lot about what we put on our skin, and how important it is to use safe and non-toxic products, and this is especially true about the products that we choose to use on our little ones. Because their bodies are smaller, they are more vulnerable to the harmful effects of chemicals in their personal care products!

Here are some of my favorite personal care products for babies and kids:

Diaper Rash Cream – I love the diaper rash balm from Earth Mama Angel Baby! I swear it’s like a miracle cream or something. It would instantly soothe and eliminate my baby’s worst rashes. Also, it smells great, is safe to use with cloth diapers, and is gentle enough for the most sensitive baby skin.

Shampoo and Soap – Everyday Shea Shea Butter Shampoo and Body Wash – This is the soap/shampoo that we use on our kids and love it. The ingredient list is short and straight forward and includes safe, non-toxic and fair trade ingredients.

Conditioner – For my girls who have longer hair and struggle with tangles, we use the Everyday Shea Moisturizing Conditioner and Detangler and love it.

Bubble Bath – This is a special treat for our kiddos, they don’t get bubbles every time they take a bath, but I love being able to offer them the fun of a bubble bath without worrying about the chemicals and toxins they’re being exposed to. We use the Everyday Shea Gentle Bubble Bath. It makes great bubbles and the strawberry scent – which I found at Whole Foods – smells amazing!!

Basically we really like all of the products we’ve tried from the Everyday Shea Baby line!

Hair Detangler – Because our kids don’t take baths every day, we usually have some brushing and detangling to do of my girls’ hair every day. We like the Honest Spray Detangler, but I also need to try to make a homemade spray detangler because it’s be a lot cheaper!

Other Soap – Baby Mild Castile Soap – We also will sometimes use castile soap to wash our kids, but you do have to be aware that it is not tear-free and may irritate their eyes. This can also be used to make a homemade bubble bath.

Lotion – We really don’t use lotion on our kids regularly. But in the winter their skin does tend to get more dried out. We love Earth Mama Angel Baby Lotion, especially the vanilla orange scent. It’s light and non-greasy and absorbs quickly, which is important to my kids. We also use hard lotion bars from Third Day Naturals which are especially great for hands that get dried out from lots of hand washing in the winter!

Toothpaste – We usually switch between Tom’s of Main Children’s Toothpaste (I’m not thrilled that this toothpaste has flouride in it, but it’s easily accessible to us and a decent price) and Earthpaste, which my kids don’t like as much, but I feel much better about.

And that’s about it. Like with our own personal care products, we believe in simplifying and not using too many products on our kids’ sensitive and delicate skin. Do you have a kid’s product that you are trying to find a safer alternative for? Let me know in the comments and I’ll do my best to help!

We love the baby mild castille soap too, Emily. We also use Tom’s of Maine kids toothpaste and they DO make a flouride free version! I find it at my local Natural Grocer’s, though for awhile they replaced it with the flouride version. I simply put in a special order with them and voolah! Here in Colorado, it’s so dry that lotion is a must even with every-other-day baths and all-natural products; I found a locally made product called “Bee Happy” that we adore.

At my house we love Green Alligator Baby Wash and Shampoo from Celadon Road. It’s low suds and so quick to rinse out of my daughters hair that she doesn’t even notice. No more fights at bath time! They also offer a Green Alligator Baby Lotion, both are made with natural and organic ingredients. Thanks for the suggestion on toothpaste, I have yet to find a toothpaste that my 4 year old likes the flavor of. Will have to give Tom’s a try.

We use Castile soap for hair and body for all my kids!

Also, hard lotion is safe and they can apply it themselves, although they rarely need it. I started making my own with Lavender EO in it and it helps heal little owies as well.

For toothpaste we use coconut oil with a little Peppermint EO added (which is all safe to swallow).

Wow, this is one of those times I have to stop and realize we’re a little weird, but it works for us. 🙂

My whole family likes this toothpaste… http://www.amazon.com/Natures-Gate-Toothpaste-Fluoride-Wintergreen/dp/B001ET7MK2/ref=sr_1_2?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1364080292&sr=1-2&keywords=nature%27s+gate+toothpaste
We have used Earthpaste, as well. I like it, but the rest of my family did not care for it.

Hi Emily .. stumbled here from green.yourway.net .. glad to read our recommendation for kid’s soap/shampoo. Not sure if you are aware of this or not but Tom’s of Maine toothpaste contains carrageenan — we have been avoiding this (but hard, carrageenan is almost the main ingredients for milk, cream, yogurt, pudding, ice cream, etc ..) but my husband said at least we can teach our son not to swallow the toothpaste. So far, I haven’t find any other natural toothpaste out-there – maybe will try the Earthpaste as well. Thanks for sharing.
