Mother’s Day is right around the corner, and while many of you are probably mothers yourself, there may be some mamas in your life that you’d like to honor this mother’s day. (Or you want to pass this list along to your hubby or kiddos!)  If so, you’d probably like to find some really great and thoughtful eco-friendly Mother’s Day gift ideas. Here are a few of my favorite ideas (hint, hint to my hubs!):

10 Great Green Mother's Day Gift Ideas!

10 Green Mother’s Day Gift Ideas:

Fair Trade Flower Bouquet

1. Flowers

Flowers are the quintessential Mother’s Day gift, but her roses might not smell as sweet knowing that workers we’re exploited in the process – often subjected to harsh and dangerous working conditions, sexual abuse, exposure to toxic chemicals, and lack of a fair-wage or overtime pay for their work.

So this Mother’s Day, make the commitment to purcahse Fair Trade grown flowers. Fair Trade Certification means that workers have safe working conditions and are paid a fair, living wage because  the farms that grow flowers are paid a fair price for their produce, and that environmentally friendly growing practices are used. Fair Trade Certified flowers can be purchased from One World Flowers.

Houseplants

2. Houseplants

Even better than flowers is giving a living plant that will last longer that just a week or a few days. Houseplants provide beauty that can last for years, and will benefit her home by reducing toxins and purifying the air.

Here is a list of 12 Houseplants recommended for improving air quality.

I love that you recommended Ten Thousand Villages–that’s a great store! There’s one in my neighborhood. My favorite thing about it is that even though the merchandise is fair trade, it’s reasonably priced–because they’re partly staffed by volunteers to keep down costs.

I don’t usually get a gift for Mother’s Day because my birthday is within a week of it. However, we have a family tradition of taking a step trek on Mother’s Day because that’s one of my favorite things to do and we don’t necessarily get around to it at any other time during the year. A step trek means going to a neighborhood with lots of public steps (we live in Pittsburgh; it’s mountainous) and going up a staircase, exploring, taking photos, and then coming back down–sometimes by a different staircase. It’s always a lot of fun!
