I first read this quote in the More With Less Cookbook (which surprisingly, the first two chapters of the book before the recipes are extremely inspiring for why it’s important to make intentional and conscious choices about the way we choose to live our lives) and it has stuck with me since then.
I really love the whole quote, but it wouldn’t all fit on the picture:
Or to use another metaphor, humanity is like an enormous spider web, so that if you touch it anywhere, you set the whole thing trembling…Just as John Donne believed that any man’s death, when we are confronted by it, reminds us of our common destiny as human beings: to be born, to live, to struggle a while, and finally to die. We are all of us in it together… As we move around this world and as we act with kindness, perhaps, or with indifference, or with hostility, toward the people we meet, we too are setting the great spider web a-tremble. The life that I touch for good or ill will touch another life, and that in turn another, until who knows where the trembling stops or in what far place and time my touch will be felt. Our lives are linked together. No man is an island. -Frederick Buechner (emphasis mine)
This just goes along perfect with what we talked about yesterday – that we can have an impact on the world around us. We can have an impact on people’s lives – both those near to us and those far away. We really have no idea how far and wide our impact will be felt, so we should be striving to make the best choices and the most positive impact that we can!
